About this event

Hamburg-based photographer Katja Ruge has spent more than three decades documenting the visual history of electronic music and club culture. Her portraits do not just record faces – they capture the moment where beat, person and space fuse, whether of Björk, Aphex Twin, DJ Koze or Helena Hauff. Early analogue photographs sit alongside documentary work from Hamburg’s Golden Pudel Club and the Warp Records circle, as well as recent portraits from her series “Electric Lights – Women in Electronic Music”. The exhibition at MOMEM pushes beyond classic framed prints: analogue photographs meet interactive and immersive projections. The result feels part archive, part installation – a walk through a subculture’s visual memory that manages to feel personal and collective at once. If you carre about the look of a movement that defined a generation of night life, this is your kind of show. Ruge’s imagess invite you to linger, recognise a face or a club’s sweaty hazy and piece together the thread that connectse 1990s Manchester, Hamburg’s clubbing underground and today’s women-led electronic scene. It is a serious but absorbing trip through pop and subculture told in photographs rather than words.
