Armin Stern: Painter and Zionist

This small exhibition in the 'Art and Exile' room on the third floor of the permanent exhibition showcases paintings by Armin Stern (1883–1944). Born near Bratislava, Stern moved to Frankfurt in 1900 and studied at the Städelschule. He became a successful landscape and portrait painter, but was excluded from exhibitions after 1933 as a 'non-Aryan artist.' He fled to Bratislava and later New York, where he continued to paint scenes of his homeland and his Jewish identity. The exhibition draws from his estate, donated by his grandchildren, and includes self-portraits, views of Jerusalem, and works from his exile.
