About this event
The two actresses slip in and out of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and every glittering guest of their salon – Hemingway, Picasso, Stein’s brother Leo, and more. With simple staging and quick character changes, the play builds an intimate, witty portrait of thirty years of literary Paris, mixing official documents, private letters, and sharp anecdotes. Erik Satie’s piano pieces drift through the scenes, giving the evening a tender, slightly melancholy air. Win Wells’ script won top awards at Edinburgh and Sydney, and it treats biography lightly – more a playful, time-hopping game with history and social rules than a lecture.
