About this event
The London Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Frankfurt’s Alte Oper for two contrasting Pro Arte evenings that each pair a soloist with a different conductor. In December, Chief Conductor Edward Gardner and pianist Alice Sara Ott open with the sparkling Festive Overture by Shostakovich before settling into Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, a work prized for its lyrical intimacy and elegant dialogue between soloist and orchestra. Ott’s poised, expressive touch draws out the concerto’s reflective character, after which the full forces launch into Rachmaninov’s First Symphony — a youthful, sweeping score that veers between brooding Russian melancholy and urgent, festive climaxes. The April concert brings Honorary Conductor Vladimir Jurowski together with violinist Hilary Hahn. Wagner’s prelude to Parsifal establishes a hushed, luminous atmosphere, then Hahn steps into Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, balancing fiery passagework with the singing, heart‑on‑sleeve melodies that have made the work a staple of the repertoire. The evening culminates in Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, a vast, cathedral‑like edifice of sound in which the orchestra’s warm strings and blazing brass deliver a performance of spacious, hypnotic power.
