Jonas Kaufmann — A Verdi Evening

About this event

Jonas Kaufmann — a tenor known for combining vocal brilliance with dramatic depth — dedicates an entire evening to the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Together with Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and conductor Jochen Rieder, he explores the emotional range of Verdi's characters: from the tender Radamès in Aida to the tormented Otello, from the reckless Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto to the conflicted Don Carlo. The programme draws arias, duets, and orchestral excerpts from Verdi's most popular works — Aida, Un ballo in maschera, La Traviata, Otello, Don Carlos, and others. Kaufmann is known for going beyond beautiful sound alone; he inhabits each role with attention to text, phrasing, and psychological detail. Rebeka, a sought-after Verdi soprano in her own right, brings a gleaming, agile voice to the duet repertoire. The evening unfolds in the Großer Saal of the Alte Oper, a setting that matches the grandeur of the music. It is a formal concert evening — seated, attentive, and acoustic — that suits listeners who know their Verdi as well as those who simply enjoy a world-class voice in full flight.
