Ahead of Advent, the renowned British period-instrument ensemble The King's Consort, led by Robert King, brings Bach's sacred masterworks to the Großer Saal. The evening begins with the chorale cantata 'Wachet auf, rft uns die Stimme', a work brimming with awakening calls and lush choral writing. The main work comprises the first three cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio – from the exuberant "Jauchzet, frohlocket" with its famous tuning-drumbeats to the more introspective reflections on the Nativity. Soprano Madison Nonoa, countertenor Alex Potter, tenor Joshua Ellicot and bass Matthew Brook join the Consort's choir, delivering historicaly informed vocal lines that let the text breathe clearly. The combination of period brass, strings and continuo gives the music a bright, immediate texture that suits the seasonal spirit without sentimental overspill. For those who arrive early, there is a pre-concert talk in the Albert Mangelsdorff Foyer (aaccess restricted to members of the Frankfurter Bachkonzerte and Friends of the Alte Oper). The concert itself is a formal seated affair, so dress as you like and expect about two hours of music.
