Grigory Sokolov, Piano

About this event

The Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov is known for his deeply personal, almost meditative approach to the piano. A typical Sokolov recital is an immersive journey: he creates an atmosphere of intense concentration, drawing the audience into the music's structure and emotion with vivid voicing and a dynamic range that can shift from a whisper to thunder. He steers clear of recordings and media hype, dedicating himself entirely to the live concert experience. His programmes, which he sets for a six-month season, often cover the core classical and romantic repertoire — Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms — but also stretch into Ravel or Scriabin. The evening at the Alte Oper's Großer Saal promises a rare live encounter with an artist who treats every concert as a singular event. Expect no flashy showmanship, just the piano and the music in its purest form, usually followed by a generous handful of encores.
