Hildebrandt’s Odyssey
About this event
A Hessian huntsman, a stormy Atlantic, and a journey that offers no safe return. This staged reading follows the Hessian mercenaries who were sent to fight the American rebels in 1776 – and saw the sea for the first time in their lives. At its heart is the real-life huntsman Hildebrandt, whose diary tries to capture the overwhelming strangeness of the voyage. Playwright Bert Bresgen mixes historical documents with surreal humour and quiet tragedy to create an evening about men who were sold like goods and, because of that sale, got to see the wider world. It also offers a first taste of the large-scale theatre project “Frankfort-Washington”, which from 2027 will explore 250 years of Hessian-American connections across three timelines.
