Frankfurt Citizens' Salon: Laid Bare

The baroque Holzhausenschlösschen, built 1726–29 for the von Holzhausen family, is currently hidden behind scaffolding and sheeting. For its 300th anniversary the entire façade is undergoing a listed-building restoration – and the work on site is revealing rare clues about the building’s past. Dr. Ulrike Schubert, a Frankfurt-based art historian and monument conservator who has worked on landmarks such as the cathedral and the Römer, presents the first results of the historical building research: was the Schlösschen erected on older foundations or did it reuse earlier fabric? Can later alterations from previous renovations be traced? Heike Isensee from the city’s building authority explains how a public restoration project is run, while site manager and mineral-building-materials expert Martin Sauder gives a view from the scaffolding. The evening is a conversation for anyone curious about Frankfurt’s architectural heritage, heritage conservation and the hidden life of a 300-year-old building.
