A double bill of two observational documentaries by Iranian director Jafar Najafi, who crafts intimate portraits of young people caught between rural tradition and personal agency. In ALONE, 14-year-old Amir becomes the family head after his father’s death and quietly resists the pressure to marry off his 12-year-old twin sisters – a restrained, almost wordless struggle against patriarchal custom, filmed with an attentive eye for the textures of village life. The shorter ASHO follows a shepherd boy who dreams of Hollywood and names his sheep after movie stars – a playful counterpoint about imagination blooming in the same landscape. Both films screen in Farsi with English subtitles. Afterwards, director Jafar Najafi joins moderator Melanie Gärtner (programme director of the Hessische Dokumentarfilmtage LETS DOK) for a conversation about the films, accompanied by the short “Aus meinem Leben” by Daood Alabdulaa.
