About this event

The evening opens with museum director Philipp Demandt and a short introduction by Bastian Eclercy, head of Italian painting before 1800, who presents the museum‘s newly acquired portrait of Cardinal Giacomo Sannesi by Guido Reni. Painted around 1609, the work is notable for the sitter’s penetrating gaze and restrained elegance. Afterwards, author Niklas Maak and journalist Rose-Marie Gropp discuss Maak’s book “Die letzten Tage der Schönheit: Die Plünderung Roms 1527 und das Ende der Renaissance”. Maak, an art and architecture critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, describes the sudden collapse of a brilliant epoch, showing how closely art, power and social order were intertwined. The book traces the destruction of Rome by mercenary troops and reflects on the fragility of cultural freedom. After the roughly 9-minute talk, visitors are free to explore the Städel collection.
