About this event
Mary Magdalene has been interpreted in countless ways over the centuries: ascetic penitent, ecstatic saint, self-determined woman. This exhibition at the Städel Museum, in collaboration with the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung, brings together around 100 paintings, sculptures and prints from major German and international collections. A special focus is on works by women artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Lotte Laserstein, Kiki Smith and Marlene Dumas, alongside masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Pedro de Mena, Georges de la Tour, Auguste Rodin and Max Beckmann. The show traces the transformation of Mary Magdalene's image from biblical times to popular culture, inviting reflection on femininity, spirituality and self-determination.
