Mainz Christmas Market

The historic Christmas market spreads across the squares around the thousand-year-old St. Martin’s Cathedral. Stalls sell artisans’ crafts, Christmas decorations, and regional treats like roasted almonds and mulled wine. At the Höfchen, an eleven-metre Christmas pyramid rotates with wooden figures of local legends: Gutenberg, a carnival jester, the Roman Drusus, and the Mainzelmännchen. Nearby, hand‑carved nativity figures stand by the chapel, and an ornate music box with carved angels plays. Two historic carousels and handmade toys attract children, while the Rhine‑side Christmas village has bookable wooden huts for a break. Live walking acts roam the market, and the programme includes cathedral concerts, matinees, a fairy‑tale performance at the state theatre, and Christmas‑card printing at the Gutenberg Museum. On 23 December the market closes early at 19:00.
