About this event

The 13th edition of the festival puts memory, resistance and artistic creation centre stage, linking them to colonial legacies, discrimination and marginalisation. The programme of features, shorts and documentaries comes from Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Guatemala; all are screened in the original language with English subtitles – some in Spanish, one in Brazilian Portuguese. Highlights include Jorge Perugorría’s opener *Neurótica Anónima*, in which a cinema worker fights to save her decaying Havana picture house; Lucrecia Martel’s essay film *Nuestra Tierra*, which uses the murder of an indigenous leader to unpick colonial continuities and land conflicts in Argentina; and Manuela Martelli’s *El Deshielo*, a 1992-set mystery about a German skier who vanishes in post‑dictatorship Chile. Joel Calero’s *Álbum de Familia* spins a family secret around Peru’s internal conflict, while the Brazilian *Quatro Meninas* imagines four enslaved women who in 1884 flee their boarding school together with their mistresses – a playful take on power and solidarity. Post-screening talks bring filmmakers and actors such as Mirtha Ibarra, Ángela Carabalí and Manuela Martelli into the room. On the penultimate evening Joel Calero presents his graphic novel *Mientras Dura el Silencio*, followed by a panel on “Cinema and Memory” with the festival’s directors. For families with younger filmgoers there is the animated *Hola Frida*, which explores Frida Kahlo’s childhood in vivid colours. The closing night pairs the biopic *Me Rompiste el Corazón* – about Chilean folk musician Roberto Parra, brother of Violeta Parra – with a live set by the cueca band 3/4 and Chilean food and drink, turning the Instituto Cervantes into a relaxed party.
