Einar Schleef – No Germany Did I Find

About this event

The evening centres on a layered documentary about the theatre director and polymath Einar Schleef (1944–2001), who also worked as a writer, painter and photographer. Sandra Prechtel’s film draws on extensive archival footage to trace a figure who fled East Germany, made waves at Frankfurt’s Schauspielhaus in the 1980s, and later shook the Berlin stage with monumental productions that revived the ancient chorus. Schleef’s grappling with the two Germanys, his own speech impediment and the dark corners of post-war history runs through the whole work. After the screening, the director joins the audience for a conversation about the making of the film. The event is entirely in German, so some language skill is needed; the atmosphere is calm, contemplative and built around a genuine exchange of ideas.
