About this event
The Intercultural Weeks have been a fixture on Offenbach's calendar since 1998, run by a broad coalition of churches, trade unions, welfare organisations, city agencies, and grassroots initiatives. This year's three-week programme carries the motto "Dafür!" ("For it!") — an invitation to take a stand for respectful coexistence in a city where people from over 150 nations call home. The programme is deliberately polyphonic. It kicks off with the Kulturfest der Nationen on Wilhelmsplatz, where international food stalls and a stage programme make the city's musical diversity audible. The days that follow alternate between quieter, more reflective formats and sociable get-togethers. A talk at the city library explains legal rights around workplace discrimination; an intercultural café gets people chatting over coffee about Greek, German, and many other coffee traditions. Parents unsure how to talk to their children about puberty, sexuality, and boundaries can drop into "Let's talk about" on two afternoons, where pro familia runs an open book table and conversation space. Musically, the spectrum ranges from a guitar concert by "Grenzenlos" — a nearly decade-old ensemble led by concert guitarist Sadegh Moazzen, in which refugee musicians embark on a shared journey through sound — to the closing concert of "Alternative Gutmensch," where regional artists spend the day performing in social institutions before gathering at RUK e.V. in the evening. Two film nights focus on migration and resistance: "KISMET" screens documentaries about the guest-worker generation between Turkey and Germany, followed by a conversation with director Merve Uslu-Ersoy; the anti-fascist film night presents "Sabotatori," a documentary about Italian partisans during the Second World War. Families with children are well catered for: a multilingual story-and-reading café at the children's library, where parents read aloud in two languages and children chat with seniors; playful democracy exercises with a storyteller at the Büsingpark playground; and an Ebru marbling workshop where children and adults learn the traditional Turkish paper-art technique together. The exhibition "Zeig mir Deinen Kühlschrank – ich lerne von Dir" ("Show Me Your Fridge – I Learn from You") at the Freireligiöse Gemeinde, which photographs Offenbach residents' fridge contents as a portrait of diversity, offers a low-threshold, everyday entry point into questions of cultural identity. On the closing weekend, several Offenbach mosques open their doors on German Unity Day with guided tours, Islam exhibitions, and personal conversations over Pakistani treats. At the same time, the 10th Kranlauf charity run in aid of AIDS-Hilfe takes place at the harbour. Most events are free and require no registration — a handful, including the opening reception and the conflict workshop, ask for advance sign-up. Because venues are spread across the city, it is worth scanning the programme brochure to pick the sessions that suit you.
