About this event
Katherina Braschel’s debut novel “Heim holen” follows Lina, raised in the tight-knit Danube Swabian expellee community in Salzburg. As she distances herself from that world, she grows increasingly sceptical of her grandparents’ victim narrative – they were expelled from Serbia – and starts digging into her grandfather’s involvement in the German occupation of Belgrade. Braschel, whose short text won the WORTMELDUNGEN prize in 2019, here blends meticulous family research with a story about displacement, guilt and long-buried secrets. In conversation with Benno Hennig von Lange, she’ll talk about her historical detective work and breaching a family’s silence. The evening is part of the “WORTMELDUNGEN im Crespo Open Space” series, which pairs writers with artists and subject-matter experts to explore current social topics from multiple angles.
