About this event
This special exhibition revolves around a site without parallel in Iron Age Europe: the Mormont, a limestone ridge in western Switzerland where, between about 110 and 80 BC, people dug hundreds of pits and filled them with pottery vessels, tools, metalwork, and deliberately arranged human and animal remains. Not a settlement or a cemetery, the plateau is interpreted as a ritual sanctuary – perhaps a gathering place whose purpose remains elusive. The show brings together more than ten years of excavation and almost twenty years of multidisciplinary analysis, and is being presented outside the French-speaking world for the first time. It was created in collaboration with the Cantonal Museum of Archaeology and History in Lausanne and the Bibracte Museum in Burgundy. As you walk through, you encounter original artefacts, including intentionally smashed dishes and human skulls placed together with those of cattle, and follow the thread of an open question: what kind of community created this place, and why did they abandon it after only a few decades?
