About this event

Migration deterrence is increasingly driving authoritarian transformations within liberal democracies, according to a research project led by the Institut für Sozialforschung. This evening event presents the project's findings, examining how global distribution conflicts – over resources, wealth, and power – shape policies aimed at deterring, discouraging, and deporting migrants. The discussion brings together journalist and author Gilda Sahebi, whose writing focuses on racism and right-wing extremism; sociologist Stephan Lessenich, known for his work on social inequality and the transformation of the welfare state; and migration researcher Birgit Glorius, who studies integration and asylum policies. The conversation, moderated by Alexander Kern, explores how these dynamics challenge the rule of law and democratic structures, with an eye toward possible counter-movements. Part of the series 'Aspekte des neuen Autoritarismus' hosted by the Institut für Sozialforschung and Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm, the talk is in German and lasts about two hours.
