Carolin Millner and her collective Eleganz aus Reflex are known for works that interweave historical research with precise fictionalisation, often blending spoken theatre with choreographic elements. In this production, they turn their attention to a lesser-known Jewish resistance group that operated in Berlin in the 1930s, led by the friends and couples Marianne and Herbert Baum and Sala and Martin Kochmann. Through acting, set design, costumes, and film projections, the evening brings to life their acts of sabotage, leaflet distribution, and escape assistance – a story that has largely slipped from collective memory. The piece is framed as a coming-of-age story, following young people who search for ways to act in a world of threat and oppression. The performance poses urgent present-day questions: What gives us stability when circumstances become overwhelming? When does a stance turn into resistance? How do you hold onto hope when your own freedom is at stake? The production weaves historical events with a young generation’s perspective, making the past physically and immediately present.
