Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko leads the Berlin Philharmonic through Respighi’s Roman Trilogy, three lavish tone poems that conjure the fountains, pine groves, and festive streets of the Eternal City. The orchestra’s full late-Romantic palette is on display, and Petrenko balances the music’s cinematic sweep with his characteristic textual clarity and dramatic pacing. The second half pivots to the intensely emotional world of verismo opera. American tenor Jonathan Tetelman — a voice built for the powerhouse roles of Puccini, Mascagni, and Leoncavallo — performs arias by Cilea, Giordano, Mascagni, and others, while a short intermezzo provides a breathing space. The evening is part of the Alte Oper’s “Orchester Premium” subscription series, offering a journey from shimmering orchestral colours to raw vocal passion in the opulent setting of the Grosser Saal.
