About this event
The exhibition brings together around one hundred animal sculptures that showcase Gaul's pioneering approach: he depicted animals not as symbols but as autonomous beings, observed with a naturalist's eye and rendered in a clear, reduced formal language. Highlights include life-size lions and apes, as well as a larger-than-life eagle landing on its nest in the museum garden, originally created for the Kaiser Wilhelm National Monument in Berlin. The works are placed in dialogue with sculptures from antiquity, medieval, and Renaissance collections, revealing how the human-animal relationship has evolved over thousands of years.
