The Machine Stops

In an underground complex of identical single-occupancy cells, all human life is managed by an all-knowing machine. Physical needs and social contact have been reduced to a bare minimum, and every action is registered and commented on by the system. Music researcher Vashti is perfectly content – until her son Kuno calls with disturbing news: he plans to travel to the forbidden surface. What he discovers there sets off a chain of events that causes grave malfunctions in the life-sustaining machine, leading to collapse, destruction, and one fragile hope for a restart without the machine. This adaptation of E.M. Forster’s 1909 short story features live music on didgeridoo and handpan, and remains startlingly relevant today.
