About this event
The Mateusz Smoczyński Quartet joins forces with saxophonist Leszek Żądło to explore the music of Zbigniew Seifert, one of the most influential European jazz violinists of the 20th century. Smoczyński, himself a leading jazz violinist of today, along with Dominik Wania (piano), Sławomir Kurkiewicz (double bass) and Michał Miśkiewicz (drums), approaches Seifert’s legacy not as a historical artefact but as a springboard for fresh improvisation and contemporary musical language. The programme also includes Smoczyński’s own compositions. Żądło, who knew Seifert personally and performed with him, provides a direct link to Seifert’s musical world. The result is a tribute that is far from a nostalgic look back – it’s a vibrant, open-ended evening of spontaneous musical energy that carries Seifert’s spirit of freedom and intensity into the present. The concert takes place in the intimate setting of the Orangerie Darmstadt and appeals to anyone eager to experience modern jazz at a very high level.
