About this event

The journey itself is part of the experience: a heritage steam locomotive from the Darmstadt‑Kranichstein Railway Museum that pulls out of the main station with hissing steam, a whistle, and the smell of coal and hot oil – railway nostalgia before you even arrive. During the short trip to Dieburg you can sit back in one of the historic carriages and enjoy the rhythm of the wheels. There is no reserved seating; you find a spot and decide freely which of the three daily return trips you want to catch, so you control how much time you spend at the market. Once in Dieburg, you step into one of the region‘s oldest and most atmospheric pre‑Christmas markets. The Martinsmarkt spreads through the old‑town lanes with more than 100 stalls selling crafts, regional produce and winter treats. A dedicated section is laid out as a historic craftsmen’s market, where a blacksmith, a scissor‑grinder, a bookbinder, a glassblower and other traditional artisans work live in front of visitors – a rare chance to watch skills that have almost disappeared elsewhere. The market is also known for serving the first mug of mulled wine of the season, and the food range is wide: roasted almonds, fresh doughnuts, and hearty dishes from local butchers and bakers. Children are well looked after with a vintage carousel and a few hands‑on activities. Travelling by train means no parking hassle, and because you choose your own return slot you can stay for a short afternoon or linger into the evening when the lanes are lit up.
