About this event
Darmstadt’s Christmas market spreads across Marktplatz, Friedensplatz, Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz and Luisenplatz with about 67 stalls. The market square is the heart of it all, featuring a large Christmas pyramid, a 20-metre Nordmann fir decorated with 13,500 LED lights that sparkle in an animated show daily at 6 pm, and the main stage. A vintage horse carousel turns on Friedensplatz, and the ‘Long Ludwig’ column on Luisenplatz glows with 30,000 LEDs. Food ranges from bratwurst, steak, roasted almonds and chimney cake to vegetarian and vegan choices, including a new falafel stand, and gluten‑free bites. Handicrafts such as basketry, wooden toys and jewellery invite browsing. Rotating huts run by Darmstadt’s partner cities — Liepāja (Latvia), Saanen (Switzerland), Gyönk (Hungary), Troyes (France) and Uzhhorod (Ukraine) — serve authentic treats like Hungarian lángos or Swiss wine and cheese. Families can enjoy a children’s train, carousels and free ‘Kinderkisten’ activity boxes with colouring sheets and crayons. On Sundays from 3 to 5 pm the stage hosts dedicated family entertainment. On 6 December St. Nicholas and the children’s punch princess ride through the market in a carriage handing out chocolate treats. Fridays bring ‘Band Friday’ with duos and small bands, and on 20 November the queer community takes over the stage for a special ‘vielbunter Freitag’. The closing night on 23 December features Trio RELOUNGE (Marcel Zocher, vocals; Thomas Markowic, piano; Thorsten Großkopf, guitar). Alongside the main market, the ‘Heiligs Blechle’ food‑truck Christmas market in the Carree passage focuses on slow food, sustainability and culture.
