About this event

Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula, whose works often mine memory, trauma, and the political histories of Central Africa, joins forces with 75-year-old dancer Maman Wawina to unearth her five-decade career at the National Ballet of Zaire. Founded in 1974 by Mobutu Sese Seko, the company was meant to forge a national identity through dance. Linyekula and Wawina turn the stage into a living archive: a blend of movement, spoken testimony, and fragments of historical choreography that sketches both a personal biography and the contested legacy of a state‑sponsored cultural project. The performance unfolds in French, English, and German with translation, in the intimate setting of Studio 1. The tone is documentary and reflective – an invitation to consider how individual bodies carry political history, and how a life in dance can become a strange and fragile record of a nation.
