Housed in a former warehouse on the city’s Osthafen, Atelierfrankfurt is the largest art centre in Hesse and home to more than 220 creatives. This weekend you’re not walking through a finished gallery show, but into the places where work actually happens: 150 studios spread across six floors open their doors and offer an unfiltered look at painting, sculpture, photography, installation and beyond. Artists are present, sketchbooks lie around, and you can chat about what they are making and how. Beyond the studios, a changing programme of exhibitions, live music, performances and hands-on workshops fills the three days – in previous years, mask-making, screen printing and experimental film sessions were on offer. Food and drink are available on site, and on Friday night the building turns into a low-key party where you can keep talking with artists and other visitors. It’s an unpretentious, curious atmosphere. Whether you’re a maker yourself, someone who simply likes roaming creative spaces, or looking for a different kind of night out with friends, you’ll meet Frankfurt’s active art community and plenty of people with stories to share.
