For one day, Frankfurt turns into a vast open-air museum where you can step inside buildings that are normally off-limits. The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, together with local experts and storytellers, brings more than 20 historic sites to life – from the neo-Gothic Old Portal of the main cemetery to the Peter Behrens building in the Höchst industrial park and the Baroque village church in Unterliederbach. The mix covers churches, castles, modernist housing estates like the Römerstadt Siedlung, archaeological spots, and gardens. New this year, the Altes Schloss Höchst hosts Jazz am Schloss with live music and a dance floor, while the Dreikönigskirche invites you to climb its 80‑metre tower for skyline views. Nearly all tours and activities are free and require no advance booking, though some exclusive tours now call for prior registration – check the individual listings. You wander from site to site at your own pace, or join short guided walks where restoration techniques, architectural quirks, and the hidden stories of your neighbourhood come alive. Families with primary‑school aged children are well served: the official app lets you filter for special kids’ programmes, including hands‑on craft workshops and interactive tours. Teenagers with an interest in history or architecture will enjoy the industrial monuments like the Peter‑Behrens‑Bau or the waterworks in Griesheim. Because many monuments cluster together, you can build your own loop through Höchst, the Westend or Nordweststadt. Allow a full morning or afternoon if you want to see more than two spots.
