At the Holzhausenschlösschen, a small baroque mansion tucked into Frankfurt’s Nordend, the Ella & Louis Jazz Club series serves an evening of modern tango — not the polite ballroom variety, but a raw, tumbling reinterpretation that swirls somewhere between melancholy and exhilaration. Argentine vocalist María Kamida is the heart of the quartet. She doesn’t just deliver a melody; she digs into lyrics with theatrical intensity, using her voice to shade every phrase with emotion. Her storytelling is backed by an unusual compact ensemble: Johannes Stange’s trumpet soars and growls, Michael Rettig’s accordion (or piano) weaves a dense harmonic fabric, and Tobias Schmitt’s double bass keeps the pulse earthy and nimble.
