The evening paints a vivid picture of the New York jazz scene in the 1940s and 50s and of the brilliant saxophonist Charlie 'Bird' Parker, the pioneer of bebop. His life of music, excess, and tragedy is reconstructed through memories of those who knew him well. Narrator Daniela Baumeister (hr2 Kultur) reads short, gripping texts, while the Jan Prax Quartet performs Parker’s bebop classics and pieces by his contemporaries in fresh arrangements – a lively tribute to one of jazz’s most influential figures.
