About this event

Harry Petersen turns 80 this month and returns from Potsdam to his old Frankfurt stomping grounds for this celebratory gig. Five decades after he was first on stage at the Dreikönigskeller and Jazzkeller, he is bringing a quintet of longtime musical friends whose shared history stretches back to the days when Frankfurt Big Band and Monday jam sessions defined the local scene. Petersen himself switches between alto sax and clarinet, playing a warm, swing- and bebop-rooted tone honed over 27 years as lead altoist of the hr-Bigband. Joining him are vocalist Karmen Mikovic – better known for her understated, clear delivery at hr2 club concerts – pianist Bob Degen, a fixture of Rhine-Main jazz since the 70s with his dense, angular touch, bassist Thomas Heidepriem, and drummer Andreas Neubauer. Expect a friendly reunion rather than a stiff gala. The set will likely drift between straight-ahead swing, bluesy standards, and the odd bebop foray – the kind of honest, hand-played mainstream jazz that rewards a close listen but never takes itself too seriously. The Frankfurt Art Bar is the right living room for it: pub atmosphere, drinks at hand, and a stage close enough to watch the musicians trade glances. Entry is free, though donations are encouraged, so you can decide on the day without committing far in advance – ideal for a relaxed midweek jazz night.
