Four double basses take over the Mozart Saal for a half-hour midday break that argues you don’t need a full orchestra when you have this much depth and dexterity. Led by Dominik Wagner, a player who delights in proving how versatile the instrument can be, the quartet (Wagner, Felix Leissner, José Trigo and Todor Marković) pairs the solemn sacred lines of Bruckner and Schubert’s dramatic “Erlkönig” with excerpts from Detlev Glanert’s contemporary quartets and light-footed arrangements of pop and rock hits by Queen, Billy Joel and Europe. The result is a programme that moves seamlessly between resonant classical sonorities and playful familiarity. A 30-minute concert format fits neatly into a lunch break, and a snack served afterwards in the foyers on levels 2 and 3 is included in the ticket. It is a low-commitment, high-texture chamber concert that asks no prior knowledge and rewards curiosity.
