Creation Notebooks

About this event

The films were created in 2020 for the company’s 30th anniversary at the invitation of Berlin’s HAU Hebbel am Ufer. Lia Rodrigues and her team weave rehearsal moments, performances, inspirations, images, and artistic testimonies into a cinematic notebook that makes the poetic, political, and artistic practice of the company tangible. What began as a pandemic-time document opens a window into the creative process of one of Brazil’s most significant contemporary dance ensembles. Lia Rodrigues has spent decades working at the intersection of art and social engagement. Her pieces are often developed in close collaboration with the residents of the Maré favela complex in Rio de Janeiro, where physical immediacy meets political inquiry. That background resonates in every frame without the film becoming didactic – it invites you to follow the movements, images, and atmospheres. On the practical side, the evening is straightforward: the studio is seated, and the film plays in Brazilian Portuguese with German and English subtitles. The compact 60-minute run time makes it an easy entry point into the festival programme, leaving room for a chat afterwards or a spontaneous visit with no heavy preparation.
