About this event
The Barrelhouse Jazzband, founded in Frankfurt in 1953 and still going strong, ranks among the most respected traditional jazz ensembles. In 1968 the entire band was made an honorary citizen of New Orleans – a nod to the city where it all began. Their sound moves from deep blues to bright swing, delivered with the unpolished warmth and collective energy that defines New Orleans jazz. Among the veterans is saxophonist Frank Selten, a member since 1961; younger players have blended in seamlessly, keeping the band’s layered, easy-swinging tone intact. For this concert they are joined by French visitors The Paris Swing Connection: saxophonist Olivier Franc, his son Jean-Baptiste Franc on piano, and trombonist Benoît de Flamesnil. Olivier Franc is known worldwide as the leading interpreter of Sidney Bechet’s music – his playing carries the aroma of 1920s Paris and New Orleans without feeling like a museum piece. The encounter promises a relaxed Franco-German dialogue in the name of classic jazz, bringing together two groups that approach the music with affection and deep knowledge. An intimate evening in the Mozart Saal that will suit long-time devotees and anyone curious to hear why this music still sounds so alive.
