Witch ’n‘ Monk are the anarchic union of British soprano-guitarist Heidi Heidelberg and Colombian flautist Mauricio Velasierra – a duo that thrives on extremes: punk meets romanticism, raw vocals collide with radically processed Latin American flutes, and free improvisation weaves through intricate composition. Their acclaimed 2020 album on John Zorn’s Tzadik label won the German Record Critics’ Award, and their latest release ‘OUTFOX’ pushes further into a sound that lives between jazz, contemporary classical and DIY underground. They are joined tonight by Frankfurt drummer Uli Schiffelholz, a versatile force whose career spans rock, big-band swing and long-standing membership in the hr-Jazzensemble. True to the F.I.M. ‘interactive’ format, the evening unfolds from solo spots into duo and trio interplay, letting each musician’s signature voice collide and converse in real time. Expect a close-up, small-club laboratory of shape-shifting improvisation, theatrical energy and sounds that refuse to sit still.
