The evening belongs to a new annual series by the Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung that highlights the guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair while illuminating Frankfurt’s international relationships. Jaroslav Rudiš, a Czech author who also writes in German, reads from his latest novel ‘Where the Dead Speak’. Rudiš’s works – including ‘Winterbergs letzte Reise’ and ‘Nationalstraße’ – weave Central European history, displacement and personal memory into atmospheric narratives, delivered with a dry humour and an ear for everyday detail. Afterwards, Tilman Spreckelsen, a literary editor at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung who has written historical crime novels and biographies of German cultural figures like Otfried Preußler and the Brothers Grimm, joins Rudiš for a conversation about the book and the literary bridges between Germany and the Czech Republic. A reception follows, offering a chance to raise a glass and discuss the evening’s themes against the backdrop of Frankfurt’s partnership with Prague.
