Once a school year, Frankfurt’s Musterschule – the only school in Hesse recognised as a centre for musically gifted students – hands the stage to its most ambitious young players. The Solistenpodium is a recital where each performer delivers a solo piece, with piano accompaniment where needed. The programme stays under wraps until shortly before the concert, but previous editions have spanned Beethoven piano sonatas to Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, reflecting the students’ range. The atmosphere is calm and attentive; you sit back and listen to violin, clarinet, brass, or keyboard repertoire, often mixing classical standards with a modern edge. Formal enough to feel like a proper concert, yet close-up and unpretentious, it’s a chance to catch the next crop of Frankfurt talent in a setting that feels like a grand music salon.
