About this event
Step back 47 million years and explore the ecosystem of the Messel Pit, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exhibition brings the ancient volcanic crater lake to life with a detailed miniature landscape model, realistic creature recreations, and over 1,400 fossil species. Highlights include the original fossil of the rare water bird Juncitarsus merkeli, a life-sized model of the giant flightless bird Diatryma, and a newborn prehistoric foal with its mother. The display covers food chains, reproduction, climate, and colour preservation in fossils, and is complemented by a hands-on educational programme.
