Philippe Herreweghe and his period-instrument Orchestre des Champs-Élysées make familiar scores sound newly minted. Herreweghe’s interpretations are known for their transparency and intellectual depth, stripping away romantic excess to reveal the inner workings of the music. For this concert he is joined by the choir he founded, Collegium Vocale Gent, and five soloists. The programme pairs two contrasting works: Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, a piece of sunny inventiveness with rhythmic twists, and Schubert’s final mass, the E-flat major D 950 — a work that packs more drama than many operas, leaping from hushed introspection to towering outbursts. Before the concert, the “Music Plus” series offers a talk on music and architecture at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum. The afternoon session is designed to enrich the listening experience, drawing connections between structural thinking in sound and space. It is only available to concert ticket holders; the add-on costs €10 and can be booked by phone.
