About this event
The Newcomers Festival has been a fixture on Frankfurt’s calendar since 2001 and brings the city’s international community together. You wander through the historic Römer halls and the adjacent Römerberg square, past more than 100 information desks. Language schools, international schools, health insurers, cultural organisations, clubs, and city services all introduce themselves – a real one-stop shop for anyone new to the region or simply curious about local support for internationals. The cultural programme runs across three stages: the Foyer Kaisersaal inside the Römer, the open-air stage at the Römerhöfchen, and the small chapel in the Römerhallen. Almost back-to-back, you get dance, song, and folklore from well over a dozen countries. This year’s partner country is Greece, and several Greek groups perform traditional and Pontic dances; the Greek Ambassador even joins Frankfurt’s mayor for the opening ceremony. Other slots include Bolivian folklore, Irish set dancing, a Chinese lion dance, Japanese Bon-Odori, Polish folk dances, a Bosnian cultural set, and a Ukrainian presentation. Children are well catered for: there is a Chinese children’s choir, a cheerleading display by the International School Frankfurt, and a short performance by a Greek kindergarten group. Food and drink stalls serve international snacks, so you can grab a bite between performances. The mood is lively but not frantic – families make up a large part of the crowd, and the overall tone is open and inquisitive. You can simply browse the stalls and catch a few shows, or actively network and make contacts. The festival is a relaxed afternoon that celebrates the many cultures that call Frankfurt home – free of charge and with no pressure to see everything.
