Mainz Carnival Guards’ New Year Parade

The Guards’ New Year Parade is the traditional kick-off for Mainz’s carnival campaign. On New Year’s morning at exactly 11:11 am, the parade moves off from Ernst-Ludwig-Platz, heading along Große Bleiche and Schillerstraße past the Fastnachtsbrunnen to the Dom. Thousands of spectators line the streets to watch the guards in their colourful, often historically inspired uniforms, accompanied by marching bands, dance troupes and giant “Schwellkopp” papier‑mâché heads. It’s a cheerful, loud affair that brings together all generations – you don’t need to be a carnival insider to feel the city’s festive spirit. Children gape at the whimsical costumes while adults soak up a sociable morning; hot drinks from nearby stalls keep the cold at bay and add to the communal buzz.
