On this evening, the Big Band of the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, led by Oliver Leicht, performs charts from the bandbook of legendary lead trumpeter Al Porcino. Porcino shaped the sound of iconic ensembles such as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Stan Kenton and Count Basie before forming his own band and building a repertoire that remains synonymous with hard-swinging big-band jazz. Oliver Leicht – alto saxophonist and clarinetist of the hr-Bigband – worked closely with Porcino for many years, and now passes on that energy and those precise arrangements with the HfMDK students. Inside the intimate setting of the Romanfabrik, the full orchestra will celebrate the warm horn sections, driving rhythms and ecstatic solos that define the “Al Porcino Bandbook”. If you enjoy hand-made swing and the infectious enthusiasm of a top young big band, this is the place to be.
