About this event

Marianne Mispelaëre trains her eye on the quiet mechanisms of living together: small gestures, fleeting traces, and the ways we share the world through language and signs. In this exhibition you encounter drawings, videos, photographs, texts and installations, many of which only reach their full form through your participation – whether by correcting a translation on the building’s façade, pulling up colour-coded chairs into a conversation, or taking home a postcard from the “Silent Slogan” series. The presentation unfolds across two floors, moving from questions of semiology (how do we read signs? who understands what?) into debate, translation and memory. At its heart is “Forum”: a circular copper platform on which teenagers and adults discussed friendship, trust, bullying and loss – captured in the film “Thirteen Years Present” and in oxidised copper plates that preserve the physical traces of those encounters. Upstairs, works such as “Die Sonne scheint noch.” treat translation as a political act. Mispelaëre has translated letters by political prisoners word by word using dictionaries, rather than relying on machine translation, revealing what gets lost or newly created between languages. The artist’s calm, concentrated visual language invites you to look, listen and recognise your own part in these acts of transmission. It is an exhibition suited not to a hurried walk-through but to lingering and thinking along.
