About this event
The Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, led by Thomas Guggeis, takes on Gustav Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony, the ‘Resurrection’. The five‑movement work follows the old maxim ‘per aspera ad astra’, moving from a brooding funeral march to a blazing choral finale that sets Klopstock’s hymn of resurrection. Soprano Nombulelo Yende and mezzo‑soprano Zanda Švēde step forward as soloists, joined by four Frankfurt choirs – Cäcilienchor, Figuralchor, Frankfurter Kantorei and Frankfurter Singakademie – that swell the sound to a massive scale. An introductory talk one hour before each performance sets the scene, then it is almost 100 minutes of straight symphonic drama: from the first rumbling double‑bass notes to the final, triumphant cry ‘Aufersteh’n, ja aufersteh’n wirst du!’.
