Discovery Art Fair brings together more than 120 international galleries, project spaces and individual artists in the light-flooded Hall 1.2 of Messe Frankfurt. Divided into a Gallery Section and an Artist Section, the fair spans the full breadth of contemporary art: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, mixed media, photography and urban art. The emphasis is on fresh discoveries and approachable prices – many of the exhibiting artists are emerging talents taking their first steps on the art market. What sets the fair apart from a typical museum visit is the open, conversational atmosphere. You can chat directly with artists and gallerists, ask about techniques and working methods, and find out what’s moving the young art scene right now. And if a piece really speaks to you, you can buy it on the spot – often at prices that won’t break the bank, even for first-time collectors. Two special performances are on the programme: On Sunday at 4 pm, Berlin artist Kiddy Citny – famous as one of the painters of the Berlin Wall, whose heart faces and crowned heads became global icons – will symbolically smash up a Deutsche Bank in a performance aimed at ‘multiplying money’. Additionally, Amigo and Nomad, two big names in Berlin’s urban art scene, stage a ‘paint’formance’ where sound, dance and painting merge into a single work. The fair is wheelchair-accessible and English-friendly.
