German-American pianist Chris Hopkins is a mainstay of classic jazz and swing – equally fluent on piano and saxophone, and the long-time leader of the Echoes of Swing ensemble. For “Swinging Christmas” he is joined by American vocalist Shaunette Hildabrand, whose clear, warm voice brings a glamorous sheen to the evening. Together with a hand-picked band – Engelbert Wrobel on clarinet and saxophone, Rolf Marx on guitar, Henning Gailing on bass and Oliver Mewes on drums – they turn German and international Christmas songs into elegantly swinging, cleverly arranged jazz pieces. The set list balances well-loved favourites like “Jingle Bells”, “White Christmas” and “Süßer die Glocken” with lesser-known tunes, all delivered with lightness and charm. Moments of quiet intimacy alternate with spirited swing, spontaneous improvisation, and humorous banter from the stage. Seated in the Jahrhunderthalle’s club atmosphere, you experience a festive concert that feels celebratory without ever becoming saccharine – sparkling and elegant, like a glass of good champagne.
